How to Enroll

Follow these three easy steps:

Step 1: See if you are eligible for Head Start/Early Head Start

Step 3: Contact your nearest Head Start Center

Step 1: See if you are eligible for Head Start/Early Head Start

We consider a mix of factors when selecting your child for Head Start.  Eligibility for enrollment is based on:

  • The child’s age
  • Family income
    • Any disabilities or special needs
    • Parental status
    • Family risk factors

    Age and Income Requirements

    • Age must be verified by a birth certificate, hospital records, medical card, or other official documentation.
    • Income is determined by what you earn and what you receive as Public Assistance. Families must provide official documentation of their income, such as two or three most recent check stubs, most recent W2 or income tax return, or receipt of Public Assistance).
    • Gather your documents and then contact the nearest Head Start Center to discuss your family’s eligibility.

    Checklist for Enrollment

    q  Proof of Child's Age: Birth certificate, Passport/Visa, Medical card, or MO Heathnet card
    q  Proof of Income: Tax return, W-2, SSI award letter, TANF award letter, Check stubs Unemployment letter, Child support payment, and Foster Care subsidy
    q  Health Information: Current physical exam/well-baby exam records, current immunizations, dental exam and blood work results

     

    Step 2: Meet the health requirements

    It is your responsibility to provide current medical information about your child. If you have questions or need help finding medical care, please contact the nearest Head Start Center.

    All children enrolled in the program are required to have a health screen that includes the following:

  • Physical exam
  • Health history
  • Hearing
  • Lead screen
  • Sickle cell test
  • Blood pressure
  • Hemoglobin screen
  • Growth assessment
  • Vision
  • Nutrition assessment
  • Dental exam
  • For Early Head Start children, you will need to provide proof of the most recent well-baby exam.

    In addition, immunizations must be complete or up-to-date. The vaccines required are:

      3 Months 5 Months 7 Months   19 Months

    Step 3: Contact your nearest Head Start Center

    You will attend the Head Start Center that is closest to your home or work. Go to Find A Center to locate the center nearest you.
